ECONOMIST OF THE WEEK: TONY ELUMELU

Tony Elumelu's journey to becoming one of Africa's most influential business leaders is a testament to the power of determination and vision.

Tony graduated with a second-class lower degree from Ambrose Ali University. However, he didn't let his academic grades define his future.

With a hunger for success, Tony began his career as a copier salesman.

A year after earning his Master's degree in Economics from the University of Lagos, he applied to join Allstates Trust Bank, despite not meeting the qualification criteria.

Luck smiled on him when the CEO handpicked him for an interview, and he landed the job.

At 26, Tony became the youngest bank branch manager in Nigeria, a position that shaped his life and kindled his passion for investing in young people. This experience pushed him to achieve greatness. In 2005, Tony led the largest merger in sub-Saharan Africa, combining Standard Trust Bank Plc with United Bank for Africa (UBA).

Under his leadership, UBA transformed into a pan-African institution with over 1 million customers and operations in 20 African countries. This remarkable turnaround laid Tony's reputation as a business expert and influential leader.

In 2010, Tony founded Heirs Holdings, a family-owned investment company committed to improving lives and transforming Africa. He also established The Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) to empower African entrepreneurs and promote economic development.

Tony's contributions to business and entrepreneurship have earned him numerous awards and honors, including the National Honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger and TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People of 2020.

Tony Elumelu's story serves as a reminder that success is not solely defined by academic grades or circumstances. Rather, it is shaped by determination, vision, and hard work.

As Tony once said, "If you do well, it will reflect, and others will see it. Success will always find you."
